Survey Instrument Technician (Edmond, OK)

We are seeking a Survey Instrument Technician to join our growing family to assist our Survey team.

SUMMARY:

Basic functions of the Survey Instrument Technician are to aid the Survey Party Chief in the completion of various types of field survey operations including but not limited to:

  • Transportation design surveys.
  • Boundary and location surveys.
  • Topographic surveys.
  • Route location surveys.
  • ALTA / ACSM Land Title Surveys.
  • Construction staking and other types of surveys as required by the company.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists the Survey Crew Chief in performing field surveys in an efficient and cost effective manner.
  • Assists the Survey Crew Chief in performing complex surveying calculations using coordinate geometry (COGO) software.
  • Operates various pieces of survey equipment needed to complete survey projects.
  • Communicates with Survey Crew Chief on details of project in order to complete the task at hand accurately and efficiently.
  • Ensures a thorough understanding of the day’s work prior from departure from office.
  • Neatly prepares thorough and accurate field notes and sketches for all assigned projects.
  • Willingness to develop and maintain proficiency in surveying methods and technologies through continuing education and training.
  • Responsible for helping to maintain survey equipment and keep in good working order and report any damage or wear and tear that may cause defects in the survey data.
  • Ensures equipment is properly charged and prepared for the following day.
  • Maintains Survey Crew Vehicle with materials and supplies necessary to complete assigned jobs daily, weekly, and monthly.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Basic Qualifications

  • Education required: HS diploma and equivalent level of training experience as a Survey Instrument Technician.
  • Skills: Ability to use handheld computer and instruments and have comprehension to trouble shoot problems with that equipment; pays attention to detail and notes changes that may affect work; excellent communication skills; able to read and interpret maps.
  • Licenses: Must have valid driver’s license.
  • Other: Work requires the exercise of a good degree of independent judgment, problem solving and initiative; Ability to operate motorized equipment; ability to work long hours outdoors under various field conditions (heat and cold) and exposure to traffic.
  • Background Check: Clean background. A thorough background check will be conducted on all final candidates in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum years’ experience: 2 + years of progressive instrument technician field experience.
  • Education required: Associates degree in Land Surveying or similar field.
  • Registrations / Certifications / Licenses: Land Surveyor in training (LSIT) with the desire to become a Survey Party Chief and progress towards acquiring a Professional Land Surveyors Licenses (PLS) and a valid driver’s license.
  • Skills: In addition to the above basic qualifications; route, transportation (ODOT), ALTA land survey standards, construction staking, topographic type surveying proficiency; experience with Topcon, Trimble GPS and Total Stations, TDS software; preparation and organization of field books; excellent verbal and written skills.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of a high school/GED diploma and 2+ years’ experience in instrument technician field operations with a survey firm in the industry.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and employees of the organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and. Ability to utilize and calculate with COGO software. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight, measurement, volume, and distance.  Possess a very good understanding of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Must have the ability to operate a computer and computer software related to surveying and data collection.  Instrument and computer proficient.  Must have a valid driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The work environment frequently is in the outdoors; occasionally working near moving mechanical parts and working in extreme heat and cold; seldom in moisture falling conditions or high precarious places; loud noise may be experienced at times. The work environment occasionally is in the indoors; sitting for extended periods of time, working at a computer terminal for extended periods of time i.e., typing / key-in-data, calculations, CADD drawings and other tasks as needed.
