Western Avenue Streetscape

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

The City of Oklahoma City selected MAC to design the streetscape of Western Avenue from NW 18th St. north to NW 23rd St. This area of the city had recently seen a significant increase in land usage. The existing four-lane industrial type roadway was no longer fitting for the planned design. The project repurposed the current pavement with a mill and overlay, transforming the roadway into a two-lane roadway with center medians and turn lanes. To make the new thoroughfare more walkable and pedestrian-friendly, ADA-compliant sidewalks were incorporated on both sides of the street while providing landscaping inside the center median. A traffic study was performed to justify the reduction in the number of through lanes. To reach the desired layout that would be equally pleasing to the city’s public works department, planning department, and constituents, multiple configurations were produced. Various neighborhood groups and local businesses were consulted while developing the final plan to ensure the satisfaction of all of the project stakeholders.
